Diwali 2017 - Diwali Cards by Paisley Plush
Diwali, the Festival of Lights is fast approaching; a five-day celebration that will mainly be celebrated on Thursday 17th October 2017 this year. A beautiful, joyous time of the year, where millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains around the world will be celebrating it; with millions more observing and participating in the festivities - An estimated 800 million people are expected to participate in Diwali this year in one way or another. And we have modern Diwali cards to mark this wonderful occasion (with links at the bottom of this post for our cards):
The date of Diwali changes each year, making it a little challenging to add the date of the festival to our calendars. It changes because it's dependent on the position of the moon, and the Hindu lunar calendar. Typically celebrated in either October or November each year; Diwali is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the Hindu month of Kartika.
Every year, Diwali (which means 'row of lighted lamps' in Hindi - 'diyas'), sees homes around the world decorated and dressed in lights and candles. Families get together; they enjoy great big feasts, share gifts, and light fireworks.
Also referred to as Divali or Deepavali, The Festival of Lights is celebrated in honour of Lakshmi, the Hindu Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity; and marks the return of Lord Rama and Sita after their 14 years of exile. The date also coincides with the Hindu new year.
The Festival is celebrated by Sikhs too, as mentioned before as the date marks the release of gurji (Guru Hargobind Sahibji), along with 52 other kings and princess of India that were made captives by the mogul emperor Shah Jahan. Additionally, the foundation stone of the Sikh Golden Temple was laid on Diwali in 1577.
